Situated within the boundaries of the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest is composed of various geological wonders, one of which is the fossilized petrified wood throughout the park. The stone strand itself is made of petrified wood and the artistic work of the three copper pieces are representations of the Painted Desert. The many plateaus formed by erosion over time show various layers of silt, sand, and clay in varying colors; these layers are represented by the leather, silk, and cotton in the wrap.
